Sort of a review: Ulysse, James Joyce

Ulysse
James Joyce
Published 1916

One day, one city, 2 men
June 16, 1904

Stephen Dedalus: young, feminine, intellectual, school teacher, elitist
Leopold Bloom: Old, masculine, pragmatic, ads salesman, populist

Book brought to court. Judge says book is disgusting, not obscene. Published by english publishing house in Paris.

Universal ambition

parody of an epic: The Odyssey
Ulysse, hero of Odyssey
Odyssey is a long epic (20 years), one hero
Ulysse is a "short" epic": set in one day

About Jews and Irish: mystical, misthicism: they are alike, "new greeks, hellenists"
Irish language and Irish revival at same time as Jewish Sionism

Is a jew a good citizen? a cosmopolitan figure?
Bloom is a salesman, like in Odyssey or like Jews, he travels from place to place, "adventurous"

Odyssey is name of Latin translation of Greek text: ackowledges his story as copy of copy... link with past, cycle (Bible), relation irish and ancients
Artistic paternity a fluid concept
Dedalus and Bloom: father figure and elusiveness of concept of fatherhood

reality is constantly disrupting: things changing into another (trans-substantiation)

sacred and mondane, parody and deflation

Tower at beginning: Hamlet

"omniscience and omnipotence": book trying to encompass everything: be all to all: impossible task: ridicule and nonesense, even further from truth
anti-colonial: freeing oneself from paternalism
people failing to connect: everyone sort of frustrated by the end: matter not solved between Bloom and Molly, Dedalus and Bloom

Bloom: accepts imperfections

"heroism of being a coward"
dedalus: "guilt of being a coward"

about going home defining home
about the trivial: people going to shops, buying stuff
symbolism vs anti-metaphorism

Bloom is not anxiety-ridden (masturbation without guilt)

christ like figure: passive, doesn't infuriates himself

Man of appetite
